2026 is Poised to Be Dubbed the Era of the Amphibian Adventure.

My key observation from the recent Day of the Devs showcase was undoubtedly entertaining, my main revelation was not the intended one: I am certain that 2026 will be the peak period for frogs in video games.

Exactly five of the highlighted projects—Frog Sqwad, Stretchmancer, Unshine Arcade, Awaysis, and Big Hops—incorporate these amphibious creatures. Given that a collection of frogs is termed an army, it feels they are staking their claim.

The Enduring Appeal of Amphibians

Croaking characters are anything but new to the interactive entertainment. From the arcade classic Frogger to the beloved froggy chair in Animal Crossing, they have long held a cult following. However, their visibility has seemingly increased in recent times.

A cursory search for "frog game" on Steam yields an absolute deluge of results. While, some of these are novelty titles, a significant portion are serious amphibian adventures.

A Data-Driven Dive

To understand this rise, I performed a detailed review into the past five years of amphibian-themed gaming on Steam. My criteria was somewhat arbitrary, prioritizing games with frogs in the title or prominently displayed in screenshots.

The findings paint a clear picture: a steady rise from under 20 titles in 2020 to nearly 60 in 2025.

This significant surge prompts the question: what's driving this craze? The frog's growing prominence in the cultural zeitgeist is also visible elsewhere, like the revival of Frog and Toad as Gen Z icons. But, the trend in gaming appears especially pronounced.

Why Frogs? The Game Design Advantage

Frankly, this is a movement I can wholeheartedly support. Frogs have natural creative potential for game developers.

  • Charming Creatures: They are perfectly suited to be designed as quirky characters that frequently end up as a highlight in any game.
  • Unique Gameplay: Their long tongues and prehensile tongues enable a myriad of innovative control schemes.

Many of the showcased games smartly employ these traits. Examples include the tongue-based traversal in Big Hops and the extra-long limb puzzles of Stretchmancer.

The Leap Into 2026

So, what is the outlook for 2026? Given five frog games publicly revealed before the year has even begun—and the potential for more—the trajectory is clear for it to be the largest year yet.

When these games find success—and historically, games from this showcase have a strong track record—we may indeed be witnessing a true amphibian entertainment revival.
